I ran across this after hanging out with old friends at a show in Dayton. We’d come up from Cincinnati to see Dayglow Abortions, but they got arrested so we ate burgers and watched the local bands (Dayton always made good bands). It was an odd collection of old punks (I’m 53, so we’re talking early 1990s, before it moved to Northside, when it was all on Short Vine. ) we spent the evening cracking each other up. Punk is like one long in joke shared by motherfuckers too bent to really get along with the rest of the world completely. I try not to take it for granted.
Anyway, thanks for this. My family moved to Northside in 1988. So this bit about punk & my old neighborhood was a great night cap.
Hey, you probably heard the owner of the Comet passed away (sudden heart attack). Dave Cunningham & the Comet was the pivot for Cincinnati between and underground scene that reacted against Cincy’s conservative culture, and a proactive scene that guided Cincinnati’s culture. If you’re in need of articles to write on… just saying.
Yes, this is devastating news to me, as I remember Dave and his kindness — and how he transformed the Cincinnati underground scene with The Comet. I was at The Comet ALL the time when I lived in Cinci; it was almost part of my identity, ha. I still go back every time I visit. Since I don’t currently live in Cinci and was not as close to Dave as my friends who still live there, I don’t know if I’m the best person to write a piece on him. But I am sincerely sorry Cinci lost such an amazing person.
